The ATLAS-M benchtop micro-XRF spectrometer from IXRF Systems, Inc examines the evidence in the CBS Original Series, CSI: Vegas.

Last year, the ATLAS-M micro-XRF became a Hollywood star on the new original series, CSI: Vegas.  However, the Atlas’s most prominent appearance was in episode 7, where the micro-XRF spectrometer was used to examine trace amounts of soil on a horseshoe where it identified Gypsum and rare Earth elements, Scandium (Sc) and Gadolinium (Gd) to lead investigators to an area where a geological survey had identified where these elements were present and thus narrow down the search for suspects.

The second season of CSI: Vegas premieres September 29, 2022, at 10 pm EST, and IXRF Systems is happy to announce that the Atlas M will continue to follow the evidence for another season.  Granted, this is all Hollywood science, but make no mistake, micro-XRF spectroscopy is a proven powerful analytical tool that provides high spatial resolution, extreme sensitivity to chemically map elements from Sodium (Na) to Uranium (U), and is non-destructive, allowing the evidence to be analyzed by other collaborating scientific techniques aiding in the elimination of doubt.

The ATLAS-M has been a popular and powerful tool utilized in many state and federal Forensic labs because of the wide variety of sample types it can analyze, including but not limited to gunshot pattern/dispersion, glass chips, rubber, paint, soil/geological material, metals, money/coins, glitter, and even horseshoes.
